A Few of my Favourite Things: June

So I thought I’d get back into the swing of things by talking about what’s kept me going throughout June. It’s been a bit of an odd month – slow and really, really fast – and it kind of feels like an awful lot has happened, whilst I’ve not been doing very much. Ever get that?

I’ve not been out spending too much this month (too much to save for currently, including that long-awaited birthday trip to Paris next month!) so there’s only a few on this list for now. Let’s hope things pick up soon!!

Lazy Afternoons

Lewis and I have become utterly obsessed with Mad Men this month. After borrowing a boxset about two years ago, and feebly trying to get past series one, episode one, we finally took the plunge – and said goodbye to our social lives as we knew them. We’re currently finishing up series five – that means an impressive (or actually quite pathetic) sixty-five episodes in one month. Wowsers. As you may be able to guess, we’ve spent many a skint, rainy weekend curled up on the sofa cruising through a series, but I have to say I’ve really enjoyed it. NOW TV, I love you.I’m now fighting the urge to throw all my clothes out and get a wardrobe like Betty’s, and chop my hair off to be more like Megan.

Peachy Keen

I love a good lipstick, there’s no denying that – I usually favour a good, strong red, but that’s not always ideal for the summery months/ After being suitably impressed by the Kate Moss for Rimmel lipstick collection (as featured in my last ‘favourites’ post, all those months ago), I decided to try out a coral pink that was doing the rounds on Pinterest. Shade 16 is a punchy, peachy pink with a velvety matte finish. It’s not too dry on the lips, and while it’s not got the longest mileage, it’s pretty impressive for the price. It instantly perks up my complexion, and best of all, it doesn’t look too much when paired with some cat-eye eyeliner flicks. Well, I don’t think so, anyway.

Sparkle and Shine

I had a visit in early May from one of my best friends – she’s one of those impossibly groomed, glamorous people, like Kate Middleton or Kim Sears. Deliciously dewy complexion and never a hair out of place, you know the type. Anyway, standing beside her in a bathroom mirror, I felt like an overly-made-up mess. I could see blush lines, I could see my mascara flaking. I could see fault in myself all over the place whilst standing next to this utter beacon of gorgeousness. So I took some advice of the cosmetic kind – we all need a few insider tips and tricks sometimes. She told me her secret – everything prior to foundation is highlighter-based. She uses illuminating serum, moisturiser and primer pre-base, and that’s how her skin looked so impossibly perfect. That, and a very good translucent powder. So I heeded her advice, and took myself off to Boots. I bought the L’Oreal Lumi-Magique primer, the same Rimmel translucent powder she uses, and this little bullet of delight, the No 7 highlighter stick. Over the last eight weeks, all I’ve had is compliments on how great my skin looks – I’ve even been called a ‘dewy goddess’. However did this happen? A combination of those three purchases, and the utter dynamite that is the YSL Forever Light Creator serum, which I had left languishing in a drawer prior to my make-up wake-up call. All of a sudden, I feel better in myself and smugly tell people that I don’t know why my skin looks this way. They don’t need to know.

A Little Splash of Something

To finish off this favourites list, a little budget buy that I’m completely head over heels for. I’ve been using a make-up setting spray for about a year now; I started off with a Clinique number, then moved on to Simple. But I kept hearing good things about this Body Shop Vitamin E spray – and since the rest of my skincare is from that particular range (washes, moisturisers, exfoliators – everything), I thought it had to be worth a try. The outcome? I don’t know what I did before this. It feels like it’s supercharged with vitamins and moisturisers, and makes my face feel soft and look bouncy and fresh, with or without make-up. The rose scent is as close to perfection as you’ll get, and it’s even flight-friendly, essential for me at the moment. It’s priced at just £8, and I can’t see myself having to use anything else!

What have you been loving this month?
