LIGHT IT UP
In my opinion, makeup just isn’t right without the glow factor – matte is flat. I love experimenting with products promising to give me fresh, radiant, dewy skin with that luminous goddess glow we lust after, so here’s a few of my tried and tested favourites…
For a golden summer glow, I love Revlon’s Photoready Skinlights Illuminator in Bare Light. This gorgeous golden liquid is perfect for smoothing over skin pre-foundation for that lit-from-within look, or even mixing in with foundation to really turn up the glow. It looks scarily pigmented at first squeeze, but a little goes a long way to achieve a subtle golden sheen.
Another product I like to start with is the YSL Forever Light Creator Serum; this extremely scientific serum works to smooth and perfect skin whilst lending an iridescent glow. It’s expensive, yes, but it feels incredibly luxe to use and gives the kind of expensive healthy glow that only posh girls seem to have.
At the other end of the budget spectrum is Technic’s High Lights, a dupe of the ubiquitous Benefit Moon Beam highlighter. This pearly pink liquid is great for giving an angelic sheen to skin – I either mix in with a CC cream or just dot a few blobs over my cheekbones and brow bones before tapping in. Similarly, Benefit’s Girl Meets Pearl is another lovely pink-toned pearly highlighter – and it smells heavenly! I definitely prefer using liquid highlighters like this under or in foundation; I find that it’s all too easy to rub off parts of your base while trying to blend these out.
For speedy sheen enhancement, I love a good highlighter crayon. My love for the No7 Instant Radiance stick will never die – this creamy champagne stick gives the most flattering glow that lasts all day – but a good purse-friendly alternative is the new Collection Speedy Highlighter in Pearl Sheen. It’s less creamy and less pigmented but works very well for getting that preliminary glow in place before topping up with a powder illuminator. Unlike liquid highlighters, these are ideal for using under and over foundation as they’re so creamy, they just merge with your existing base without budging it.
Powder highlighters are a bit of a new love of mine as I’ve always preferred liquid/cream formulas, but these powders are just too good. Bourjois’ Poudre de Riz is a very shimmery pink powder that is gorgeous dusted very lightly over the finished face for a gentle but beautiful glow – I like to use this on a very fluffy brush so as not to overdo it, as it is very sparkly! For focusing a glow on eyes and cheeks, my new love is the Makeup Revolution Radiance Palette, particularly the shade Exhale – this is a pearly, moonstone shade that is just beautiful brushed onto the tops of cheekbones, brow bones and the Cupid’s bow. I can’t believe how cheap this powder is as it’s so good, comparisons with the Hourglass Ambient Lighting Palette are justified.
