Monthly Favourites: May

This month has seen me dip my toe into a higher-end branch of skincare. I’ve always been intrigued by the Nip + Fab skincare range, particularly the Bee Sting collection, so when I spotted the face cream and the eye cream heavily discounted in my local TK Maxx (where else?) I thought there was no better time to try it out for myself. Stay tuned for my full review coming soon, but my initial reaction is good. The creams are both rich and dense so only a tiny amount is required, but they leave my face feeling plump, smooth and soft.

Not strictly makeup, but my new toning shampoo is just pure heaven and is the best makeup for my hair! I finally got my roots touched up this month and decided to get my whole colour lifted again, to a pearly, silvery blonde that I absolutely love. Since I went blonde back in August, I’d been using the Pro:Voke Touch of Silver toning shampoo, but I wanted something gentler and more effective – the Pro:Voke formula seems to really strip out and dry my hair. I went with my hairdresser’s product of choice and purchased the Joico Colour Endure Violet toning shampoo – and oh my god, this stuff is amazing. It’s sulphate-free, super gentle but is incredibly effective, leaving my hair soft and shiny and refreshing the colour with every wash to make sure I keep the silvery tones I love.

My favourite new purchase this month has to go to the outfit I’ve purchased for a wedding I’m attending next month. I thought about a pastel party dress, I thought about a sleek jumpsuit – and then I went all-out, rock n roll, Kate Moss in Ibiza. I’m going with a black chiffon backless plunging maxi, with cape sleeves and patterned all over with silver glittery stars. Paired with cool flats and some kind of messy braided hairdo, I’ve got a feeling this is going to be one of my favourite outfits ever.

I got my hands on a seriously cool top right at the end of this month and I am OBSESSED with it. After falling in love with *that* J Crew ruffle-sleeve Breton blouse (and then feeling nauseous at the price tag) I tried to find something similar that I could afford, and ASOS came up roses with this little beauty. I can’t get enough of Breton blouses anyway and this one is just that little bit extra-special, I love it!

You might recall me mentioning tracking down a beautiful pair of silver leather lace-ups, and rest assured, a fortnight on I am still utterly in love with them. Have you ever seen a cooler pair of flats?

I have to say, this month has been all about those second-hand sites for tracking down a bargain. eBay and Depop have been great to me this month and I’ve sought out pieces I’ve loved and lost online in the last few months – the black maxi dress and silver shoes both being excellent cases-in-point. New favourite pieces at bargain prices? That’s my favourite kind of shopping.

At last, Netflix put the final series of Him & Her online! If you haven’t ever watched this BBC 3 sitcom then I urge you to do so; it’s just the right mix of ironic and awkward, sweet and downright hilarious. I love it!

I’ve taken it right back to the old school for May, and have been listening to one of my favourite albums non-stop all month. Fleetwood Mac’s Rumours is an oldie but always a winner in my eyes.

This month has seen my love of breakfast food reach whole new levels. Sparked by a visit to my old favourite, The Breakfast Club, back at the start of the month, where my friends and I indulged in piles of pancakes and prosecco, I haven’t been able to get enough of brunch this month. It helps that two bank holidays and various press breakfasts have allowed me to get more involved in this, so I’ve been eating avocado on toast with prosciutto pretty much non-stop. I even found a place that serves churros with dulce de leche as a breakfast option. What a time to be alive.

My biggest treat this month was a trip back up to one of my old haunts, Aberdeen. I love Scotland so much and I always look forward to a visit, especially when I can fill the days with visits to meet friends and catch up with my family. This weekend saw a three-day visit that featured a lunch date with my best gal followed by drinks, followed by pizza, wine and the football and more drinks at the pub, visiting Lewis’ family and catching up with an old friend, and finally meeting up with my grandparents after missing them on our last few trips. I can’t wait to hit up Edinburgh next month!

What have you been loving this month?
